I live in the Boston area with my husband and two little ones. I started this site in the fall of 2004 as a quick way of sharing photos with family and friends who live far away. The scope and audience have grown quite a bit since then.
I call it a “phlog” because it’s more photos than text. We live in a beautiful city, and since we walk everywhere (we don’t have a car) we encounter visually interesting things every day. I also enjoy sharing links to things I’ve found that are beautiful, useful, or well designed, but I never do “sponsored” posts. I’m open to the idea of sidebar advertising, though, so if you’re interested, you can contact me about that. You will notice that I generally don’t discuss ideas here, not because I’m not interested in discussion, but because I don’t feel confident enough in my opinions -or skill in presentation- to publish them.
Awhile back, I asked readers to contribute to my about page by asking questions. Here are the questions they came up with, along with my answers.
From Jess: What’s your family like? Brothers, sisters, oldest, youngest? I have three younger siblings (two sisters and a brother). Our parents’ home has always been full of energy, noise, creativity, laughter, food, music, books, intense discussion, pets, and almost always more people than actually live there.
And how did you get started in crafting/art/design? I caught the creative bug from my mother. It has only gotten worse over the years. Every so often I find a new application for my interests (theatre, graphic design, music, paper arts, writing, photography…). So far I’m still a jack of all trades and master of none.
From Laura: I want to know how you fit everything into your busy life (marriage, children, work, friends, hobbies……)!!!! That question has been answered here.
From Stephanie S: I would like to know what kind of camera you use….have you ever studied photography books, or is it all natural? My camera (a gift from my husband the Christmas before our first child was born - gotta get good baby photos!) is a Canon PowerShot A610. It’s dependable, portable, and has just the right features for my use: enough to be versatile, but nothing overly fancy. I never studied photography, but had a few friends who did. They let me read some of their books and gave me a few pointers.
From Jen: What do you most love about living in the Boston area? Wow. That’s hard to narrow down. I love the variety. Ornate historic buildings next to stark modern ones, Southie accents, medical geniuses, a few notorious characters, every nationality you can think of, lots of students, art and technology, beauty and function, cold snowy winds and salty summer breezes, Red Sox fever, decent public transportation (don’t laugh, it could be worse), friendliness and frankness mingled in good proportions… what’s not to love?
What is currently the thing that most delights you about each of your children? About Austin? About motherhood? I love that Sam can “joke” now. Something funny happens (usually of a slapstick nature) and he’ll laugh and look at me knowingly, as if to say “I get it.” He has the cutest laugh.
I love that Maggie likes to be snuggled all the time. It means I don’t have my hands free as much as I’d like, but I’ll miss that when she’s older.
I love Austin’s voice. It’s warm and gentle, but without the slightest hint of wimpy-ness. I could listen to it all day.
I think the thing I love most about motherhood is knowing that under our little roof lives a group of people who love each other. We’ll have to work at our love over the years, especially as the kids get older and start fighting.
But if they end up loving each other as much as my siblings and I do in adulthood, I’ll be more than happy.
