Last weekend, on New Year’s Eve, Boston hosted its annual “First Night” celebration. From lunchtime until midnight, there are family-oriented activities, festivals, shows and artwork all over town. I had to work during the day, but Austin and I met up just in time to catch the parade (which happened to be passing right in front of our store). We also saw some breathtaking ice sculpture and a fireworks show in Boston Common. They do another set of fireworks at midnight, but I think it’s nice that they have an early show at 7pm for families. Streets were shut down, snow was falling, and the whole city seemed to be out enjoying the celebration. Vendors all over town were selling noisemakers, colorful hats, glow sticks, and spinning light-up toys. I think every child in the city must have had one of those plastic trumpets. There wasn’t a moment that evening when we couldn’t hear one blaring.
