My workplace has started selling these fantastic craft letters. They’re as light as papier-mache, with a smooth finish that’s easy to paint, color, or stamp. Here’s how I made a room decoration out of Sam’s name. I didn’t do his full name, or it would’ve taken forever.
Step 1: Use acrylics to paint the background. I’m a fan of the Making Memories scrapbooking paints. They dry with a rich, matte finish that can be stamped, colored, written, or even inkjet printed onto! They’re also easy to wash off hands and paintbrushes.
Step 2: Add painted details.
Step 3: Decorate with rubber stamps. Dye-based inks dry faster, so you can color in the images sooner. But they’re VERY permanent. If you’re working with a child, you should use a pigment ink. It takes longer to dry (a hair dryer or heat gun can speed things up) so it’s easier to wash off little hands.
Step 4: Use colored pencils to fill in the images.
The letters are thick enough to stand on their own on a shelf, and light enough to hang from a wall.

Here’s another thought: It would be fun to use these with a child who is learning his letters. You could decorate each letter with pictures of things that begin with that letter.
You could also use stickers or decoupage to cover them.
The letters look awesome!! You are so freakin creative.
I think I may have to follow your lead and buy Rowan some letters to decorate. Thanks for the creative inspiration!
