Since mothers are supposed to be placing babies on their backs to sleep these days (something that decreases the risk of SIDS), we’re also supposed to give them daily time on their tummies. This helps them develop certain muscle sets and keeps the backs of their heads from becoming misshapen. The problem is that most babies this age seem to hate it (as Maya and I were discussing earlier this week). Despite the brightly-colored quilt, happy toys, and cooing parents at his eye level, this is how Sam’s “tummy time” usually progresses:

Do you have a Boppy Pillow you could use to “prop” him up with? Emma hated tummy time too and a friend shared the boppy idea with me and it worked really well for us. When it comes to what the “experts” say you’re supposed to do…don’t sweat it. I think God gives each parent wisdom for their own child and what works for one may not work for another. When Emma was able to roll over she ended up sleeping on her tummy no matter how we put her to bed. We worried about it too, but by God’s grace she survived and is thriving.
You know your baby better than anyone else. Sam looks like a loved, happy and healthy little boy — you’re doing an amazing job!
I loved the progression in the photos. I’ve seen the process many times!
Thanks for a laugh- hopefully not too much at Sam’s expense! -Maya
both of my daughters have hated tummy time as well, and i am happy to announce that they both can sit and neither has a flat head.

I’ve started trying the Boppy thing recently, and it really helps! He still gets upset after a couple of minutes, but at least that’s better than a couple of seconds!
