melita, i think it’s very interesting that the description on your onesie is “binky!” i was just wondering if “binky” is a regional term. you’re from tennessee, right? my mom spent part of her childhood growing up there, and i remember that she called a pacifier a “binky.” i don’t recall ever hearing anyone else refer to it as that… what do you think?

“Binky” is the Playtex brand name for pacifiers, so I guess it’s sort of like people calling facial tissue “Kleenex.” My family didn’t move to Tennessee until the youngest was past “binky” age, so I’m not sure where it came from. We called it that when two of my siblings were babies in Texas, but most of the Southern people I know call it a pacifier or “pacie,” so I don’t think it’s a Southern thing, either. When we lived in Canada, we had friends that called it a “Nuk,” which I thought was funny. ;) Maybe someone out there has done a study on this! :D

well, there goes my theory! maybe my mom just used playtex stuff with us!! nuk is a brand over here in germany though, so that one makes sense to me. i’ve always heard it called a pacie too, so the binky thing always sounded a bit strange… my mom was born in lousiana though (how long have pacifiers even been around?), so maybe it’s more of a deep south thing than a southeast kind of thing?

it’s just the english teacher in me that is so curious, i guess!

and then there are people like me who get confused and call it a binkifier. :)

i have heard it called all of these, and although i know it is a brand name, i usually call it a binky.
