Misery and Miracles

There are cute baby photos at the end of this, so bear with me, or just skip the ramblings and go down to the photos, if you can’t stand the suspense. :)

Here’s the miracle part. I just have to write a little about God’s care for us since we moved to Boston. We came here for Austin’s graduate school, but every day I’m more convinced that school isn’t the real reason we’re in this particular place at this particular time. This ministry is. We’ve had a few surprises since we came (Sam not the least of them) and many challenges. But every time I get discouraged, God works miracles. I won’t write them here, but even if I did you’d have trouble believing some of them. :)

When Sam is in his crib at night, as far as he knows he’s by himself. If he wakes up in the dark with a leaky diaper he feels alone, frightened, and uncomfortable. In his little baby mind he doesn’t know for sure that things won’t always be that way. He cries out and, magically, Mama and Daddy appear. They set things right, give him kisses and he’s able to sleep again. What he doesn’t fully grasp is that we are always in the next room, hearing his rustles and squeaks on the baby monitor, always conscious of his presence and always loving him. God is even closer to us than that.

Ok, now for the misery. :| Sam and I have been sick with another stomach virus. It has been less violent for him than the last one, but more violent for me. I’ve kept down four saltine crackers and a few sips of ginger ale in the last 36 hours (and lost 5 pounds in the same amount of time). I’m so glad Sam has been able to nurse, drink pedialyte, and even keep down some infant cereal and bananas. I dreaded another weight episode like last time. He’s much stronger now than he was then, though. We’re feeling better today, so hopefully that’s the end of it. This is the only thing I like about being sick: the day after, when your strength is back and you can throw open the windows, get some fresh air, and hang out with Mr. Clean.

Here are some photos I took a couple of days ago. People joke that Sam looks like a different baby in every picture. That’s partly because of how quickly babies grow and partly because he has a seemingly unlimited collection of unique facial expressions. Here are a few just from one day.

Bright Eyes Yo, you talkin' to me? Oh, really? Hee hee! Grrr. I wasn't trying to escape. I was just... eh... Curious George cracks me up! Must... get... camera! Why, whatever do you mean?

    Melita,
I hope you feel better soon. It’s no fun when the mommy gets sick too! I’ll be praying for you!

    Thank you both!
It’s too bad we had to be sick during his first “real” snow. And now that he’s feeling better there’s not much left. I may take him out tomorrow to find some leftover patches he can play in. :)

Did Austin get out of this one AGAIN????

;o) Seriously, I am glad there was one functioning parent available; God IS gracious. I think I heard somewhere that it’s going to snow agai a little this weekend? Maybe? Don’t worry; I’m sure if you stay in Boston for any length of time (please do) that Sam will make his share of snow angels ;o)

Well, in the wee hours this morning Austin got struck down, and then Sam had a bit of a relapse this morning. This is awful.

Sorry. Hope you’re better soon. Some day the informal epidemiologic experiments we conduct on a regular basis here at BJU—sending kids home on cuts while inviting prospectives into the dorms—is going to do us all in.

    The Sam pictures are great.

Thank you for the delightful photos of Sam. Perhaps just taking them made you feel a little better and brought some sunshine into your difficult week. “Let all those who put their trust in Thee rejoice; let them ever shout for joy because Thou defendest them. Let them also that love Thy name be joyful in Thee.”

The thought about God’s being so incredibly close was beautiful and just what I needed to hear. I’m posting a link to this article. Thank you!
