Fallingwater

On the way back from West Virginia, we did something we’d wanted to do for a long time. We went to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater. It is stunning, tucked along the hillside, hovering over the falls in seemingly perfect balance. Knowing the whole story makes us appreciate its presence even more. Insufficiently cantilevered and constantly fighting mildew from the moisture of its location, it should have fallen apart long ago. Extensive restoration has kept it alive and beautiful.

Also, I wanted to mention that Austin has finally posted about his cancer, with photos at the end.

I’ve frequently said that Frank Lloyd Wright was not so much an architect as a sculptor on a large scale. His buildings are almost always interesting; and some are beautiful. But you wouldn’t want to live in them unless you had both the resources to keep them spruce and the patience to make do with awkward spaces.

That is such an amazing house. Were you able to go inside? I like the straight lines
of his designs–so clean and spare. Can you imagine living over a waterfall?
