Making Caramel Apples

So here are the results of last week’s caramel-apple-making adventure using the apples from our landlords’ tree. The color is a little off in the photos. I’ve had trouble getting a good white balance under those energy-saver CFL bulbs. The fluorescent setting seems to overcompensate, but the incandescent setting is completely wrong. I’ll probably just have to do it manually each time. Oh well.

Caramel apples are easy to make. Just follow the instructions on a bag of Kraft caramels (the bag even includes a few popsicle sticks for that purpose). We wanted to spice ours up a bit, though, so we did several with melted chocolate drizzled over them, and several with an “apple pie” coating. For the chocolate, just melt chocolate chips in a bowl on your coffeepot. The coffeepot uses a low, even heat that melts the chocolate slowly, without scorching. Dip an apple in the caramel, then drip the chocolate on using a spoon. For the “apple pie” coating, crush some graham crackers, and stir in a little cinnamon and nutmeg. Sprinkle the mixture over a freshly dipped apple. The hardest part is waiting for them to cool in the fridge before you can eat them!

Oh… and don’t expect to do this without making a huge mess. ;-)
