So few days stand between us and the arrival of our new little family member. She stretches and strains for more room, not knowing that soon she’ll be in a wide, strange, wintery world, the voices she knows well becoming suddenly crisp and strident, brightness overwhelming her little eyes.
Big brother Sam is fond of the wintery brightness, learning new words that go along with it:
snow (in which the “s” is replaced by an odd nasal huff: Hno!)
Christmas Tree (which comes out “Kishnish Tee”)
I am thinking. Processing. Absorbing beautiful thoughts to soften my fear as those painful, confusing, sleepless first days approach: the soft sound of clean snow falling fast into drifts, the liquid sheen of red Christmas ribbon, Sam’s self-satisfied chuckles as he removes his cozy slippers and throws them behind the couch, the twinkle of tiny lights, the scent of fresh evergreens hung about our antique church building, the smooth richness of hot chocolate…
What a beautiful time to first meet the world.
