I think that's because it's a vascular birthmark, caused by extra capillaries, not extra pigment. So it changes when her bloodflow changes (it shows up more when she's too warm or upset). Because it's so large, and in a very prominent place, the pediatrician has referred us to the dermatology department at Children's Hospital for laser treatment. I plan to blog in more detail about the situation and treatment process, in case it might be useful to other parents. Yeah, I’ve noticed it changes shades in different circumstances.
