Thursday Thoughts - Skills

Somehow, the other day, I found myself thinking that if I could be skilled at any hand craft (and have unlimited tools and someone to teach me) I’d have a hard time deciding between carpentry and metalworking, mainly because the materials are stronger and more lasting than my current medium, paper.

So I wonder: Aside from the obviously necessary num-chuck skills, what would you choose if you could have any tools you wanted and someone to teach you? I’m thinking in the category of tangible, professional skills, not skills like common sense, working well with other people etc. Obviously, we’d like all of those. :-)

I’d like to work more with sewing. It’s hard to find modest clothing.

I’ve always wanted to be able to make beatiful pottery…I tried every single semester I could at college to get into their class. I wasn’t an art major, so I had last dibs, which is perfectly understandable; BUT–my last semester I FINALLY got a place! I was soooooooo excited, and I promised handmade mugs to all my friends, acquaintances, roomates…. for the first three days after registration, “Mugs For All!” literally became my slogan.

I showed up for the first class….and couldn’t get through the door. Literally. It was blocked by about 30-40 other people who’d ALSO been psyched and surprised to find out they too had finally won a coveted wheel station (I think there were maybe 14 max per class). The instructor–she was new that year–was close to a total freak out when I showed up, and exclaimed, “They forgot to cap the class at registration! You’ll have to leave.”

I was sooooooo sad… But I got over it, and maybe someday I’ll take a class ;o)

There are many things I’d like to do. It’s hard to decide. Right now I have a hankering to spin. I have a beautiful spinning wheel that was given to me. I’d love to learn to work with wool. I’d also love to make beautiful furniture in miniature (not kits, but furniture that is often as beautiful and expensive as full size).

I would love to sculpt. Out of marble.
    Look out Michelangelo.
