I’ve decided to change my Saturday theme. Instead of posting a link to something interesting (which I’d rather save for gloomy Mondays, anyway) I’ll be posting a photo of something small.
Background, if you’re interested: When I was a kid I was obsessed with small things. I used to make miniatures out of clay and household items (toothpicks, rubber bands, scraps of fabric, buttons). And like most kids, I also used to dream of shrinking down to the size of a mouse and exploring the world from that size (anyone remember “The Littles?”). Then I made the mind-blowing discovery that, as long as I put my eyes in just the right position, I could actually see the world as though from that size. Try it sometime (when no one is looking). Put some interesting objects on your kitchen table and hold your eyes at table-level. It’s easy to imagine you’re standing there, ready to climb over that pen like it’s a fallen tree, or perch in the handle of that coffee mug, warming your back against the stoneware…
And once you’ve started, it’s hard to stop. You notice little details in things that you’ve never paid attention to before. Your mind finds a breathtaking mountainous landscape in the moss-covered roots of a tree, or a vast desert terrain in a broken sidewalk. I’ve started trying to take pictures that capture what my mind sees in these small things, and each Saturday, I’ll share one with you. You’ll start thinking this way too (if you don’t already), and then we’ll all need therapy! Sound like fun?
