It was chilly but sunny, and we had a blast with some dear people we don’t get to spend much time with anymore.

It’s true. Hard work, a good cry, or a visit to the vast ocean can realign your perspectives. And adding good friends to any of those three makes them even better.

I spent most of the day Thursday taking Maggie to and from her appointment at Children’s Hospital. It was a gorgeous day to be outside. Glum businessmen, sullen skaters, harried nannies… all become vibrant and cheerful in these first days of sunny spring weather. Sam enjoyed a little walk after supper, visiting the neighborhood cats and dogs, pointing out airplanes and jabbering unintelligible things to a little girl down the street.

It may have felt that way because in warmer climates I missed the first signs of its approach, not being nearly as eager or desperate for it as I am here. But here, where it has been chilly or cold for six months now, my eyes fasten to every tiny bit of green creeping out of a crack or tinting the tip of a branch.
